The Golden Rule

While I was getting the boys to bed tonight, Austin and I had an interesting conversation. Let me preface the story. In the past, Austin has asked what the dots on his face (FRECKLES) are. We have told him they are angel kisses and that he is so lucky to have a little brother and little sister in heaven who are apparently sneaking him some kisses. He's talked about it quite a lot in the past and has felt really special because of it.

Well tonight, our conversation went like this...

Austin: "Mom, I wish I had a different name."
Me: "Like what? What's wrong with Austin, Austin Boston?"
Austin: "Well, nothing really. I just wish my name was Reese." (Like Reese Mayhew)
Me: "Really.... why is that?"
Austin: "Well, it's not really my name.... (sigh)....it's my face."
Me: "What in the world is wrong with your face?"
Austin: "Well, I really, really, really like my brother and sister.... but I don't like the sparkles on my face they leave me."
Me: (by this time, I am having a really hard time keeping it together) "What's wrong with having freckles? You know you're a really lucky boy to have a little brother and sister who watch over you and give you kisses?"
Austin: "Ya, I know, but maybe when I'm 13 or 20, I can get a new face."
Me: "What? How?"
Austin: "I've seen it on TV, MOOOOOOOOOM! And I'm really tired of (a little boy from his class) making fun of me. He tells me, "WOW! Those freckles make you weird!" and it makes me feel bad."

AHHHHHH.... how sad is that! It's crazy how self-conscious he is already at 5 years old and that he's picking up on things like plastic surgery from TV in an effort to fit in and not be made fun of because he has "angel kisses". I still think he is adorable and he is a product of ME so So-And-So from school needs say something nice or NOTHING at all!

RULE TO LIVE BY: The GOLDEN Rule: If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

Nah, I'd tell Austin to kick the crap out of the kid and give him some other kisses on his face . . . but that's the over protective mamma of redhead that I am :)

OH, that breaks my heart. He is such a sweet kid, and so handsome. Chase will say crazy stuff like that too. I am hoping it is just the age. I used to be embarrased of my freckles too though, so I understand.
Oh, Spencer says, "punch the kid in the face!!"

I had freckles and I used to be SO worried that people would make fun me! I still have them! Now, I think they're cute!! I LOVE HIS FRECKELES...He wouldn't be Austin without them! They make up his personality. Maybe it's about time Austin uses some of his Uncles wrestling moves!! Austin, you're handsome because you look just like your mom!! Parker wants to play!! Bring him over where freckles or no freckles are loved!!

Poor guy! I personally, love his freckles! We'd love to see you when you're up for Christmas too! We'll be around for a little bit while you're here and then we are meeting up with my parents in Hawaii. Give us a call!

How do kids learn to be so rude at such an early age? Madison wouldn't wear a certain jacket to school because one kid said that she looked funny in it. Now, she asks me all the time if she looks pretty in what she is wearing. (Why does that start so early too?) I keep trying to remind her that even tho she is pretty on the outside it is even more important that she is pretty on the inside.

I am surprised Austin didn't kick the crap out of that kid. How sad. I am not looking forward to the schools day when kids come home crying from what mean kids say or do. I am afraid though Faith might be the mean kid. JUst kidding. I don't think anyone will mess with her though. Plastic Surgery wow, I can't believe what kids pick up on. Tell Austin I still have Angel dust on my face, and I had a huge freckle on the end of my nose when I was little, I hated it. Tell him Jayken even has some freckles appearing. How sad is that. Tell him we love his angel kisses.
